I believe it's
important to know something about the people you work with. So let me
tell you a little about me.
It isn't unusual
for people to comment on how broad and diverse my background is. These
comments are always made in the context of how valuable it is to possess
such a far-ranging experience.
experience allows me
to quickly grasp new situations, make connections others miss, and
provide unique insights.
In other words,
I'm well-rounded, well-seasoned, and well-equipped to serve businesses,
non-profits, higher education, faith-based organizations, and
individuals with their writing, editing, editorial project management,
and communications needs.
I am able to
translate technical information into readable content accessible by the
not-so-technical. I've worked successfully in telecommunications,
finance, higher ed, aerospace, manufacturing, security, religious,
media, news, advertising, sales, marketing, publishing, non-profit, and
And it doesn't
hurt than I'm very organized and able to wrestle chaos into clarity.
I grew up in New
Castle, Indiana, home of the world's largest high school fieldhouse. As someone once called me, I'm a "Hoosier hayseed." I'm
fine with that. I've got a fair amount of redneck, among other things,
in my DNA.
As a kid, faith
was central to our lives. Still is. Our little church, First Assembly of
God at 18th and E, was founded by my maternal grandfather. Many of the
members were aunts, uncles, and cousins.
I attended and
graduated from Walter P. Chrysler Memorial High School which now is
known as New Castle Chrysler High School. The Chrysler plant that once
was the heart of the town is no more so there've been mixed emotions
about retaining references in the name of the school.
My next stop was
Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri where I earned a B.A. in
English and Biblical Studies, with a minor in Psychology. Like many
students, I shifted my major more than a few times, but settled on English
because, via the wizardry of great literature, it encompassed all the
things I was interested in, from art to history to sociology to politics
to business, and more.
Since then, over
the past 40 or so years I have developed nearly every kind of written
communication for print, broadcast, and online. I've done marketing
communications, social media, PR, community relations, corporate and
employee communications, and developed many other kinds of

I served as the
Christian Bookseller Magazine in Carol Stream, Illinois (now
Christian Retailing) and as the Managing Editor of Bridge
Publishing, Inc. in South Plainfield, New Jersey (now Bridge-Logos Books)
For nearly eight
years I held positions in employee communications, proposal development,
technical writing, quality & process management, and more in various
units of AT&T in New Jersey.
I returned to
Indiana working for Rolls-Royce Aerospace (formerly Allison Engine) in
Indianapolis, Indiana doing proposal development, and later served as
the Corporate Communications/PR Manager with Best Access Systems
(formerly Best Lock and now owned by Stanley Works).
I moved to
Cleveland, Ohio in 2008 to take on a role in higher education as the

In the midst of
my "professional career," in-between "real" jobs, I did a
variety of other kinds of
work. These include call center tier 2 technical support for Verizon
DSL, factory work as a spot welder,
office administration, home construction, greenhouse labor, janitorial, lumber yard labor,
direct home sales, directory keylining, graphic layout, and menswear
sales. And, of course, I had a newspaper route as a kid, as well
as a lemonade stand in the summer.
also taught a continuing education course for IUPUI in business writing.
